Competency hearing set for store assault suspect Coates
Allen Dwayne Coates 37 sobbed in Jefferson County Court as a judge ordered a mental competency evaluation before any plea in Kentucky and West Virginia cases. He is accused of assaulting a 9 year old at a Wal Mart in Ashland and an 11 year old at a Target in South Charleston, posing as a security guard and, in WV, facing charges of sexual assault kidnapping and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The judge gave six weeks for evaluation before extradition to West Virginia.

A Thursday blaze on the Gateway Arch grounds in St. Louis led to the evacuation of about 8,000 visitors from the Arch and Museum of Westward Expansion as thick black smoke hung over downtown.
