Annual Sidewalk Sale to attract thousands in Lawrence

Downtown Lawrence launches its 31st annual Sidewalk Sale drawing about 125 stores and an estimated 20,000 shoppers. Merchants cut prices 30 to 70 percent, with parking tight and traffic slower. Tonganoxie extends water conservation plan indefinitely

City officials in Tonganoxie keep an odd-even outdoor watering rule in effect as wells stay low. Water plant superintendent Kent Heskett noted wells fell to about 9 feet from a normal 13 to 14, with a 6-foot level threatening pumping capability.

Priest Charged in Indecent Liberties Plea Negotiations Under Way

Catholic priest Rev Dennis Schmitz 41, amid plea negotiations with Douglas County DA, asked Judge Michael Malone to set a preliminary hearing for Aug 14 to pursue a possible plea. He allegedly fondled a 14 or 15 year old between 1998 and 1999 while in Lawrence. Schmitz formerly recruited college age men for the priesthood and now faces another indecent liberties charge in Nemaha County with a July 29 preliminary hearing.
