German forces push toward Rostov and the Caucasus while Russia seeks to hold the Don line. American Douglas bombers strike tanks in the Don basin as Britain ships tanks to the USSR and ponders a second front.
British imperial troops advanced south along the El Alamein front in Egypt but were counter attacked by German Italian forces and forced to yield some ground. New Zealand troops on the Ruweisat ridge repelled a motorized assault, while air activity intensified on the southern sector.
A truck stalled on Union Pacific tracks along the levee road north of Lawrence just after midnight. The driver flagged a westbound train with a flashlight, prompting Sheriff Charles Banning and Officer Walter Palmatees to respond as crew helped push the truck off the rails. The train then halted shortly before crossing, no injuries reported.
The FBI reports 14 enemy aliens are arrested in New York including 13 Germans and one Italian editor. They were taken to Ellis Island for hearings before enemy alien boards. An Italian editor and several Germans disclosed affiliations with fascist or Nazi groups. Names were not released.
Four people die in a southeast Florida shooting spree. Irving Leopold, 37, Ester Leopold, 32, a six year old boy, and an expectant mother are among the victims. A motorist slain earlier is identified as Ralph J. Morin Jr., 19, after the killer commandeered a car and fled, leaving a wrecked vehicle near Biscayne Bay. Authorities pursue the mystery gunman across the region.
Laying of track from De Soto to the Sunflower Ordnance Works is nearly done. The first train should reach the plant within days as grading of four miles from the Santa Fe spur is finished by Jones Construction. Track weight will be standardized once materials are secured, speeding plant construction.
The School of Fine Arts announces a closing sequence of concerts on Sunday Monday and Tuesday. Percy Grainger guest conducts both the Mid Western Music Camp orchestra and band programs with Dean Swarthout and David Lawson guiding ensembles. A final student recital follows with performers from multiple studios.
The War Price and Rationing Board received a July tire allotment from State Director H. Q. Davis. For extreme emergency only three new tires and two tubes for passenger cars and 30 recapped tires plus two new truck tubes were issued as cars must retain four tires with one worn out. Heat increases tire applications per Chief Clerk George Wetzel.
In the second quarter the inheritance tax receipts totaled 3014.28 dollars. County treasurer Roy Flory remitted 2863.58 dollars to the state while 150.70 dollars remained with the county as compensation and was placed in the general fund.
Reports from the Pacific theater describe Japanese forces retreating from Wenchow in Chekiang after brief occupation amid Chinese pressure. Chinese high command says other Japanese positions in Kiangsi and Shansi provinces were retaken, while Allied air strikes hit Rabaul and northern targets near Australia. A Honolulu mock invasion at Pearl Harbor’s former Hawaiian base demonstrated large scale Allied exercises under Gen Emmons. Tokyo claimed heavy Japanese losses and sinking or damaging hundreds of vessels since the war’s start.
A collision near Marshall Junction Missouri injured one and killed three crew from Jefferson City. The eastbound 68 car freight struck the rear of a standing 110 car train at 10 40 p m. Twenty two cars derailed and livestock cars destroyed. Wrecking crews worked to clear 400 feet of track. traffic expected to resume late today.
A German air raid in broad daylight on the English south coast killed five people and wounded about a dozen pedestrians. A woman and four children died as a row of cottages was demolished by a bomb from a lone Messerschmitt. The high command said German bombers sank a British patrol boat and damaged a merchant ship near Torquay. RAF fighters also destroyed a German fighter off the French coast.
Maj. Gen. Lewis H. Brereton announced as head of the United States army air forces in the Middle East. In 86 days of operations American bombers have logged 21 identical missions, bombed enemy convoys, and attacked Benghazi and Tobruk. Five enemy planes were shot down and three possibly destroyed. three American bombers have been lost in combat.
Fred Ellsworth reports at the 28th annual American Alumni Council conference in Hot Springs Virginia that education remains vital for wartime needs. Delegates from Treasury, Army, Navy and Aviation branches discussed a service plan, war bond drive in October, and a system to log inductees with university cards. Ellsworth heads next to Chicago after the meeting to engage KU alumni at Great Lakes Training Station.
The FBI announced the arrest of song composer Meyer Philip Grace and Channing Drexel Lipton in Los Angeles on charges of trying to extort $250,000 from film executive Louis B. Mayer. Grace, 30, formerly a prizefighter as Young Jack Dempsey, and Lipton, 25, allegedly demanded payment and later claimed a messenger would collect it. Both confessed.
The navy reports two United Nations merchant ships sunk one in the Bay of Bengal off India and another in the Atlantic. Survivors from a U S merchant ship sunk April 7 1942 have landed at a United States port after air attack and cruiser shelling. A small British vessel was torpedoed and shelled in the Atlantic with survivors landing at an east coast port.
The index of 60 stocks averaged 36.8 points, a drop from yesterday’s 36.9 as market activity slowed.
The Lawrence recreation committee organized a unified summer program including Bible classes, art, reading, immunizations, and playground supervision. Miss Electa Kindelsperger directed immunizations and Dr. H L Chambers led inoculations. enrollments rose overall with strong junior participation and volunteers from the community.

McLaughlin drilled a fresh gasser on his land north of McLouth. tested yet, expected several million feet. A wildcat test east of Winchester is halted by engine trouble with rumors of gas shows.
Up to July 15, 214 Lawrence citizens were registered to vote for the August 4 primary. City Clerk Harold C. Fisher notes many registered have moved away since the last general election. Registrants: 3,962 men and 4,252 women. Voters may register at city hall until next Friday evening. books kept open until 10 o'clock in addition to regular hours.
Henry Clark, vice president, general counsel and director of Union Pacific, died last night in New York of a heart ailment at age 67.
Washington reports the House began final debate on a 6.144 billion tax measure with administration leaders expecting only minor revisions in the Senate. Senate Finance Chairman George warned delays until late summer or early fall for action, amid talks to raise revenue toward 8.7 billion and possible changes to corporate rates and the mandatory joint return for married couples.
A New York review of army ration K details a day of testing by journalist John B Lewis. The three compact meal packs supply 3726 calories with biscuits veal coffee sugar and chocolate plus snacks but fail to feel as filling as regular meals.

Warfront dispatches report anti aircraft batteries of the Red Army on the Voronezh front shooting down German planes, destroying tanks, and silencing artillery. In recent days one battery reportedly wiped out 50 planes, 31 tanks, and 400 German troops.

Mrs. Richard E. Hanson, wife of a Methodist board missionary interned in Peking by Japanese authorities, says living conditions are good and Americans may move within the city wall. The May 15 letter, routed via Chungking and an African clipper, took two months to arrive, first word since November 15. The Hansons and their children have lived in Lawrence 18 months awaiting repatriation.
