Wal-Mart zoning battle continues in Douglas County court
The case centers on Wal-Mart’s planned store at Sixth and Wakarusa and whether city zoning definitions classify it as a department store. State facing office decision over historic Kansas buildings
The state bought the Landon and Docking buildings after moving from the former Santa Fe Railroad HQs in 1986. Landon houses about 900 workers in 349,707 square feet, while Docking covers 546,812 square feet with around 2,100 staff. Docking will shed the Kansas Department of Transportation as it moves to the old Security Benefit building in Topeka, a 1999 purchase by Fricke, ex president of Security Benefit. The 18.5 million price for the new building and about 11 million in renovations drew Legislative criticism.
