Firefighters battle 8600 acre Sierra Nevada blaze along state line

Firefighters focused on the Sierra Nevada fire near Topaz Lake as bulldozers rebuilt firebreaks around homes amid the worst drought in 30 years. About 1000 firefighters, three air tankers, and two National Guard helicopters worked the 8600 acre blaze on the California Nevada line, 30 percent contained. Spokeswoman Laura Williams warned wind and very low humidity threaten progress.

Helms Returns Home After Heart Surgery

U S Senator Jesse Helms aged 80 returned to his Raleigh home Tuesday after nearly three months in rehabilitation following surgery to replace a pig valve in his heart. Spokesman Jimmy Broughton said Helms looked forward to living with his wife for the first time in three months and noted his plan to leave the Senate when his fifth term ends in January.
