Meriden smithy keeper teaches blacksmithing tradition
Meriden Kansas resident Jim Bevan runs a century old smithy that preserves the lost art of blacksmithing. Bevan, a former railroad worker, trains his wife Judy and son Will while mentoring others in the craft through demonstrations and classes as part of the Kansas State Historical Society program. The shop, on Palmberg Street named for Swedish immigrant Albert Palmberg, holds 1880s tools, a 1901 floor, and a stash of 100 hammers and many tongs, with Bevan aiming to keep the trade alive for future generations.
