Fire station wins county approval for eastern substation
Douglas County Commission approved a conditional use permit for a new Lecompton Township Fire and Rescue substation at 847 N 1800 Rd near the Kansas Turnpike to serve eastern parts of the township. The plan adds a third station, improving coverage within five miles of residents, joining existing sites in Lecompton and Big Springs. An adjacent five acre rezoning at the former Kaw Valley School site was authorized to support two more Bishop Seabury Academy classrooms, with the existing building used temporarily until completion of permanent facilities one mile west of Wakarusa Drive. Two Lawrence residents were arrested by the Tri County Drug Enforcement Unit on marijuana and paraphernalia charges, with additional counts for possession with intent to sell. Bonds set at 7500 and 4500 dollars. A man from Lawrence, Isaac Smith, 24, was held on 50000 bond after missing a prior jury trial.

Lawrence Briefs: Man Arrested on Warrant in Douglas Co
Lawrence, Wednesday, arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in a jury trial that was to start Monday. Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone set a 50,000 bond. The pending trial concerns misdemeanor marijuana and paraphernalia charges, with a Sept. 8 jury date. He was jailed since about 2 p.m. Wednesday after a prior month arrest for allegedly making a criminal threat.
