Surviving veteran faces trial for unregistered destructive devices

Alfred Dutton, 67, a once fearful survivor of the world economy, goes to federal court in Wichita for possession of unregistered destructive devices. Investigators found grenades, ammonium nitrate bomb materials, anti-government materials, fireworks, ammunition, gunpowder, and firearms on his property and computer. The defense says prosecutors exaggerate threats, portraying him as a Mad Bomber, while his lawyer says he is a veteran collector seeking to sell WWII-era hand grenades on eBay.

Brownback weighs scale accuracy efforts in Kansas

Gov. Sam Brownback oversees review of the Kansas Department of Agriculture plan to improve accuracy of over 4,000 large scales used for scrap metal, recyclables, and agricultural goods. The system, semi privatized since his 1986-93 tenure as agriculture secretary, faces criticism as 34 of 72 inspected scales failed to meet accuracy standards between July 2012 and February 2013.
