Kansas Supreme Court rules seized Wichita property not tax exempt
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that real estate seized from drug dealers by the city of Wichita is not exempt from property tax before sale. The one story house was owned May 27, 1988 to Sept. 13, 1989 and sought tax exemption which BOTA denied, upheld by Shawnee County District Court, with the court noting exemption is for Legislature to decide.

Smith Center Army unit wins top Army food service honor
The 995th Maintenance Company of Smith Center earned the Army food service top national honors after a June competition in Bellaire. Maj. Gen. Rueger praised the unit’s operation noting strong cooking, sanitation, and organization as finalists were judged on area setup, food prep, and records. An August awards ceremony in San Antonio will announce the final recognition.

Convicted man sentenced after October Winfield homicide
A Cowley County jury found Doni Willie Lee Hamilton 22 guilty of first degree murder in the October slaying of Kurt Finuf in Winfield. He was also convicted on two counts of felony theft and weapon possession. The sentencing phase begins next, with potential life or 40 year term.
