Gregg A. Barnett 20 of Wellsville faced Douglas County Court for vehicular homicide after a May 25 collision that killed Norman McConnell 17 and passenger Jane Larrick 15. Barnett received a $50 fine and plans to appeal to district court.

Local 4-H horse enthusiasts head to two district events next week to qualify for the state show. Douglas County riders compete Wednesday in Ottawa while Jefferson County participants ride Tuesday at Oskaloosa's Lucky Spur Saddle Club. Events begin at 9 a.m. and include showmanship, western pleasure, pole bending, English pleasure, and American saddlebred three gaited pleasure. Winners earning purple or blue ribbons advance to the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson in September.
