The government fined America West Airlines five million dollars for maintenance and operating rule violations. The FAA found 17 aircraft flown overdue for structural tests, including A-320 door area inspections, and some flights operated without protective netting in cargo holds.
Richard Dick McDonald, who with Maurice Mac McDonald created a self service drive in restaurant in California and helped launch the McDonald’s chain, died in New Hampshire at 89. The announcement came from the Chicago area head of the franchise. The brothers sold rights to Ray Kroc and the McDonald’s Corp. was born.
Flash floods from Shoal Creek swept vehicles off bridges in Lawrenceburg Tennessee killing two people and leaving three missing. The disaster damaged water systems and cut power as 115 homes were destroyed or damaged and volunteers aided residents amid rescue efforts.
CBS stations in Spartanburg Mason City Wichita and Mobile pulled the Late Show this week over a ticket dispute with Spartan Communications owner Nick Evans. Some Florence Columbus and Toccoa stations also limited airings while Evans cited low ratings and test of alternative programs. Rob Burnett blamed advertisers and some viewers for the decision and defended the ticket policy.
