Community groups discuss police relations plan in Lawrence

Lawrence leaders from streets to city hall met at South Junior High to hear the police community relations steering committee report and suggest additions. They backed local control of officer selection, more workshops, expanded human resources, city committee meetings at night, and volunteers for city bodies.

Fire damages Oliver Hall lounge on KU campus

Firefighters from two pumpers and a snorkel truck battled an early morning blaze on the fifth floor lounge of Oliver Hall at Kansas University. About 500 dollars in chairs, a sofa, blinds, tile and furnishings were damaged with severe smoke on walls and nearby corridors. Residents on the fifth floor may be relocated as the state fire marshal investigates.

Edwards Named In Drug Charge

Dennis B. Edwards 21 of Moline Illinois will appear August 2 in Douglas County District Court for arraignment on illegal possession of cocaine. A preliminary hearing was held in county court and he remains in the county jail with bond set at 2500. Police stopped a car on June 30 and two hypodermic syringes plus cocaine were found on Edwards. The other two men in the car were found guilty in municipal court of vagrancy.

Fire causes alarm at Hazen home in Lawrence

A fire started from an electrical short at 11 44 p m Wednesday at the Ronald Hazen residence 406 Johnson in Lawrence without any damage reported by firefighters who responded to the scene.

Car Demolished Near Lone Star Lake in Douglas County

A 1964 model car went off the road near the east edge of Lone Star Lake about 16 miles southwest of Lawrence. The incident was reported at 6 50 a m. no one is located or confirmed injured. The vehicle is registered to Edmund J Kelleher Stratford Conn but no such person found in the area.

Viet Nam Peace Talks Hint at Quick Pact on POWs

Xuan Thuy told the 121st weekly talks the South Vietnamese people must determine their own future and the U S will not impose a government. Springfield man charged after harassing pickets at phone facility

A 33 year old Springfield Missouri man was arrested Wednesday night for harassing several pickets at a Southwestern Bell Telephone facility. A spokesman said he annoyed a picket and complained that he could not telephone his wife who was about to give birth.

Five Demo hopefuls agree to limit ad spending

Five Democratic presidential contenders reached a principle agreement to cap radio and television spending at five cents per eligible voter across 23 primaries.
