Indicted man linked to Lawrence thefts and flight
Indicted about 50 miles north in Valdosta Georgia detectives found a credit card tied to a vehicle owner used to buy a bus ticket to Lawrence in the name Wesley Kelley. When Kelley stepped off a Greyhound in Lawrence on March 21 investigators moved to arrest him. A 9 mm handgun and two magazines were found in his gym bag. Kelley said he panicked when learning the rental car keys were at a Lawrence health club and fled south to dodge the case, stealing the handgun from a friend in Arkansas on the way to Gainesville Florida. He later returned to Kansas to turn himself in. Charges carry five to 10 years each. A federal vehicle theft count tied to a Ford Explorer taken from Fort Leavenworth in February appears unrelated to the Lawrence case.
