Aaron Wright’s 12 week old pure bred Rottweiler Rah was kidnapped from his pickup at Kwik Shop on West 23rd Street. After two days of flier campaigns and a plan to meet at Taco Bell a night sting retrieved the dog unharmed for a $20 gasoline fee rather than the $300 reward. Wright, a Kansas University student and owner of Pinnacle Landscape Design, said the episode felt like a movie scene.
After talks with Lawrence politicians, Manhattan area officials dropped a redistricting proposal that would have split Lawrence between the 2nd and 3rd districts. The plan faced opposition for dividing the university and city and was rejected as unfair.
The House passed a measure allowing mail order purchases of medicines from abroad to cut prescription costs, while rejecting a broader import plan. FDA warned about safety, and critics argued big drug firms misuse patents to delay generics. The vote split 324-101 on the amendment, 414-16 overall. Senate action pending.
Thousands of people who paid delinquent student loan collection fees are eligible for refunds or credits from the Education Department. About 114,000 loans are known eligible so far, with refunds averaging $100 and some over $500. The review, tied to a 1995 class action, could double as it finishes.
The Education Department may refund borrowers overcharged on collection fees when loans were turned to collection agencies. Refunds go to those who paid excess. credits to those with outstanding loans if contracts capped collection fees at 25 percent.
