Wheat yields exceed expectations and corn outlook improves
Farmers report wheat harvest strong with rainfall not as essential as feared. The 494 million bushel crop hints at lower wheat prices around 2.64 to 2.70 per bushel while corn remains in late growth with 2.06 per bushel. Weather forecasts expect July rainfall to keep averages near typical levels as corn enters critical stages. Farmers aim for August through September harvests and note volatile price swings. Chris Rogers contact details appear in the notice.

Health department seeks more money in budget plan
Douglas County officials face pressure as the health department asks for 330740 from the city and 496115 from the county to maintain 1999 services. County administrator Craig Weinaug notes budget declines mirror other agencies as grants shrink. If the full increase isn’t approved, Kent warns program cuts may be necessary and the department has already trimmed feasible reductions. The commission will review the request Monday at 9 55 a.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse chambers.

Fake bomb threats traced to local kids in Lawrence
Lawrence police traced two Saturday afternoon bomb threats to a group of unsupervised children ages 7 to 11.
