Carpenter bees differ from bumble bees in appearance and habits
Bumble bees are hairy with yellow and black abdomens and possess pollen baskets, while carpenter bees are hairless with blue and black abdomens and lack pollen baskets. Carpenter bees are solitary, with females capable of stinging only when provoked, and males buzzing near heads are harmless. Females bore into unfinished wood. larvae feed on bee bread and develop by late summer but emerge next spring. Damage is usually slight unless many bees act cumulatively. painting or treated wood helps, and insecticides can seal entryways.
