Des Moines Flood Locks Water Plant as Power Fails

Des Moines floodwaters swamped the water system and left thousands without electricity as the Mississippi and tributaries rose. A water treatment plant serving about 250 000 people shut Sunday, with restoration possibly taking a month. National Guard set up 29 water points. up to 30 000 residents briefly lost power.

North Lawrence flood harms shops. residents d side

Water from overnight storms forced the Lawrence Fire Department to place a marker on North Second Street as water receded four feet. Engine No. 5 pumped water toward the river while six blocks remained underwater. Business owners, including Roger and Maxine Kuker of Roger’s Food Center, accuse city officials of inaction and fear months of losses. City Manager Mike Wilgan said drainage relies on gravity, with water still coming from north flats and around the airport as more rain is forecast.
