Mayor taps prospects to replace Sunflower jobs in DeSoto
DeSoto Mayor Jim Beadle says the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant's shift to standby could be cushioned if the Defense Department selects the 10,000 acre site for one to three to six Defense Finance and Accounting Service centers. Each center would employ 4,000 to 7,000 workers, potentially offsetting Sunflower’s 648 layoffs. Decisions expected by March with December indicating if DeSoto is on the short list. Beadle cites a strong workforce and state retraining funds as key factors. The plant site also offers lab space and energy capacity to attract high tech firms.
