Bleak days predicted for state highway system
Kansas Secretary of Transportation John Kemp warned the highway network faces deterioration as inflation and funding shortages bite. He said road resurfacing is halted, major bridge work scarce, and layoffs possible, with a potential $32 million deficit and loss of federal funds unless Legislature acts. He noted fuel tax receipts fall as drivers curb travel and urged minimal maintenance under a bare bones plan.

State legislators file suit to force property reappraisal
Topeka and Wichita news conferences announced a lawsuit by Sen Paul Hess and Rep Timothy O Sullivan seeking a court order mandating statewide reappraisal of all property in Kansas. Kansas to negotiate with neighbors on disposing radioactive waste
Kansas will begin interstate talks with Oklahoma Nebraska Missouri and Arkansas later this month to craft a compact governing low level radioactive waste disposal and storage. The plan aims to cover sources from industry medicine universities and power plants and could bar nonmember areas unless included. A cost study estimates a single Kansas site at 19.5 to 24.1 million to build and annual costs of 970 thousand to 1.2 million with higher costs as waste volume grows.
