Veto Threats Rise as Farm Bill Faces House Vote
The House advanced the farm bill amid veto talk after rejecting an escalator clause in the target price system for cotton, wheat, and corn. The escalator would adjust target prices and could eliminate subsidies if costs rise, while critics warn of a multi billion dollar bill. The Senate has a higher set of targets in its version, with costs projected at seven billion annually or more.

Mitchell Sees Nixon Aiding Clean House By Ousting Aides
John N. Mitchell told Senate Watergate investigators that President Nixon has been “lowering the boom” by removing aides tied to Watergate and other wrongs. Mitchell cited H R Halderman and John D Ehrlichman as examples while Nixon defended the resignations as merited and not evidence of guilt. The inquiry continued as secret talks over presidential documents proceeded with no immediate subpoena decision.
