Derby Entries Await Inspection For Sunday Soap Box Race
Officials awaited most of the 35 entrants for the annual Soap Box Derby at Winter Chevrolet for safety inspections. By noon only seven cars had passed. Rob Mumbers 12 David Miller 11 and Bill Stoneback 11 completed inspections. Inspecteds cars will run practice from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Derby track on 11th Street. An Oil Can Derby features Lawrence Mayor Richard Raney and County Commission Chairman Harvey Booth in a two-adult race as part of Sunday's events.

Two Women Injured In Powder Puff Derby Crash
In Lebanon Ohio two female contestants Doris Bailey and Helen Hedges were injured when their derby plane crashed on a farm. Bailey 46 from Anaheim California the pilot and Hedges 50 from Santa Ana California the co pilot were taken to Middletown Hospital with possible internal injuries and a broken arm respectively. Pan American 707 lands safely after engine fire near Los Angeles
A Honolulu bound Pan American 707 with 56 passengers and 11 crew returned to Los Angeles International Airport and landed safely at 11 25 a m after an engine fire on the No 3 engine was extinguished.
