Social Security plans in danger from pension exemption dispute

Washington July 12 Administration officials fear the Roosevelt social security program could be wrecked by a fight over exempting private pension plans from national old age taxes. Conferees still clash over senate language exempting companies and workers in private plans, risking return to Congress for a final settlement. Some warn a veto risk exists if the amendment upsets the program, while supporters say it preserves liberal private plans and prevents gaps if federal rules fail. President Roosevelt may intervene to resolve the dispute.
