At Lake George July 2 35 of 100 starters remained in the 24 mile marathon to Late cote. Ernst Vierkotter the leader from Germany held a comfortable lead over John Keating of New York at the four o clock check. Mrs Lottie Moore Schoenmel who dropped at the start had worked up to fourteent h place.
In St. Joseph Missouri Gov. Bakers requisition for Chet Simpson’s return to Oskaloosa Kansas was not pursued as Simpson was freed by habeas corpus. Sheriff Harvey Boyle noted Simpson had been held two weeks with no contact from Oskaloosa authorities. A late item reports a Toledo crash killed 13 as a New York Central train struck a local traction car in the suburbs.
San Francisco July 12 crowds greet Lieutenants Lester Maitland and Albert Hegenberger returning from Hawaii aboard the Maui. Aircraft circle and salutes greet the aerial pioneers. A city office overhaul follows, including glass windows, lobby enlargement, and interior redecorating during the welcome events.

In Alville Utah on July 12 a boy, Ellis Richins 14, was abducted from his father's sheep camp. A ransom of 10000 dollars is demanded. The Richins family is wealthy and the kidnapper held the son while a younger brother possibly escaped or was allowed to return. Posses from nearby towns search the hills as alarms close the town.
William Henry Gallagher chief counsel for Aaron Sapiro in his libel suit against Henry Ford responded to Senator Reed’s claim that the case did not cover the Jewish question. Gallagher asserted that Reed knows the Sapiro case indeed presented the entire Jewish question. A separate item notes two inches of rain fell near Salina Kansas causing minor flood concerns.
Forecast from Kansas reports local thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight, followed by cooler conditions. Wednesday is expected to be fair and cooler in eastern and southern portions. Roads vary from clear to partly cloudy with light rain possible around Kansas City.

The city grapples with when new water rates take effect after the commission approved a schedule to raise charges. City Attorney C C Stewart says the new rates cannot be retroactive, with the ordinance becoming effective about July 24. billing will reflect old rates for meters read before that date, while new rates apply afterward. The plan, starting July 24, sets a minimum $1 charge for 2000 gallons and tiered rates for higher usage, aiming to boost monthly revenue by about $1,260 compared with existing rates.
Wheat prices on the Kansas City market fell sharply after the government crop report increased the forecast yield. Cash prices declined about 12 to 15 cents a bushel across grades, while futures dropped as much as 3 1/2 cents, with July delivery at a low around 1.32 dollars.
AP reports the investigation into the Pennsylvania senatorial election will press on after a federal court in eastern Pennsylvania dismissed the Reed committee suit seeking ballot boxes from Delaware county. Judge Thompson said the court lacked jurisdiction and that the matter is for the senate to decide. The suit, filed by Jerry South for the committee, followed the contest by William B. Wilson against William S. Ware, with boxes seized in Philadelphia and Allegheny counties previously. Delaware county resisted the request, citing the committee's lack of official existence.
Norton Kansas July 12 AP Ross Marshall 30 year old farm youth charged with first degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting near Norton of W F Atkinson 46 a bachelor farmer found unconscious from gunshot wounds. Atkinson lay in wait suspicion falls on Marshall who has not been located since late last night. The victim came to Norton county years ago and was respected with no known enemies. In Chesham England AP reports Rev Walter Wynn, predicting disaster on July 11, tied to the spirit of Locarno. He cites his March warning and links the Dublin murder of Kevin O Higgins to a Geneva disarmament setback, asserting nations will act independently until May 19 1228 the next pyramid day.
In Chicago a deadly gang fire leaves two more victims, Giovanni Blandina and Gaspar Alagna, joining a string of seven killings in Little Italy since July. Blandina, shot through the skull after being taken for a ride, was found miles from home, while Alagna fell near his house. Brother Sorrenzo Blandina had been slain July 39 at nearly the same spot.
Miss Alice Myers of Lawrence, 37, died in a Kansas City car crash that injured her Sunday night. The Ford roadster she rode in with Oscar Foreman collided with a Buick driven by Sam Bellente. Foreman and Bellente were arrested. Colonel Clarke, formerly of Lawrence, leaves July 10 for an Army camp in Omaha to command a unit of the 89th division.

Topeka July 12 AP The Kansas wheat crop is now estimated at 123 339 000 bushels by the state board of agriculture or 87 percent of normal with 11 926 bushels per acre on 10 342 000 acres for harvest The board raised its estimate about 15 04 bushels since the June 1 survey Favorable June weather did not lift yields to match the 150 000 000 bushel crop of 1926 yet the 1927 crop exceeds the five year average by 784 000 bushels The June rains stopped in time to aid a dry favorable harvest period and boosted yields in central and northwestern Kansas The board notes rains in southwestern Kansas did not improve and in the southeastern section yields declined Reno county is named as the leading wheat producer with 6 363 000 bushels Pheterson and other counties follow with varying totals The report also notes protein content lower this year and that price premiums linger for high protein wheat with weights generally similar to last year.

A woman found a chalk mark burned into a leather cushion after church in South Park. Water from the radiator was drained to extinguish the fire. She noted no smoking nearby and earlier had found the car door ajar at a prior service.
