Weather remains hot as district court adjourns until July 30. Reports of community events include a concert in South Park, a high school social for teachers, and updates on local construction. Kansas University chemistry building plans handed to contractors. baseball and bowling results noted. a theft reward offered for a painter’s dog.
Lawrence promoters announce an August Masonic pilgrimage to Colorado with a special Santa Fe train leaving August 6 and an Union Pacific train later. The trip, costing about 18 dollars with optional side trips, will include a commissary car and attendees from several states. Two thousand Masons are expected with visitors from Louisiana California New York Maine and Canada.
Several hundred gathered at Warren and Vermont streets for the cornerstone laying of the new Presbyterian church, valued at 16000 dollars. The ceremony included prayers, a town history reading, and remarks by J S Caldwell, with a subsequent lawn social where contractors will be paid from subscriptions.
Miss Alberta Cavin entertained at which last evening for her cousin Mr Will Cavin of Indiana. Miss Lillie Lorman received a carnation trophy and a yellow doll baby signified luck of the evening. Guests included Misses E Sellards G Sellards Patterson Soxman Liston and others with Messrs Lesith Fischer Kathermae Cavin Kubos and Loxman Peof and Mrs W H Careuth and daughter Constance. The group left this afternoon for Douglass Michigan to spend the summer. The Merchants Athletic Association opens tomorrow evening offering hospitality at the club house with usual amusements planned.
The Home Store promotes coffee and tea spices with atelephone number 2195. The Post Office Newspaper reports a baseball game tomorrow at McCook field described as one of the best ever played.
The Ministers alliance of the city met last night and appointed a committee to meet county officers regarding a Sunday picnic at Bismarck grove next Sunday. Rev J B Gibson informed County Attorney Brownell and Sheriff Moore that games would occur and officers must enforce the Sunday law. Sweeney argued the outing was a simple amusement for working people, noting past picnics had no complaints. He suggested the event might be abandoned if the alliance withdrew or altered their protests.
The Regular Monthly Meeting of the Associated Charities drew a large attendance despite heat. Mrs Street presided in the president and vice president's absence. The report on industrial education was delayed due to Mr Rogers absence. An adjourned meeting will be held next Monday to discuss the matter. Bills totaling 3.25 were approved by the auditing committee. Prof Blackmar noted funds can be raised once the society demonstrates readiness. An electric street railway fundraiser meeting is set for Wednesday July 1, 1899 at 8 PM at A L Selig’s office to determine necessary action. Dr W L Leonard has moved his office to 706 Massachusetts Street above the Dry Drug Store.
An audience in Litehugh county hears a lecturer describe Yosemite Valley trip and Bridal Veil Falls. A red headed questioner asks for exact height. Bramley replies the height is 261 feet 9 inches with no further questions.
London auction highlights included an engraving of Edmund Kean as an Indian chief, a portrait painted by F Meyer in 1820, and a miniature of Mrs Kean with hair locks. Kean had joined the Huron tribe under the name Alentenaide after gifting silver cups to the tribe in 1826.
