New York July 11 Harry Thaw states he is not insane and fights to publicize his previous claim. He discusses his mother’s move to Europe for treatment and says he prefers she stay there for her own sake. Thaw notes he did not use prison yard exercise yesterday, claiming fatigue and time spent with lawyers.
Gas Gatos and Nick Gatos, brothers, quarrelled after Gus attempted to recruit Nick for work at a parlor. The dispute led to Nick's arrest today, with a second court appearance scheduled for tomorrow morning at pollen court.
Kansas National Guard company receives orders for its annual camp at Fort Riley with the regular army. Troops depart August 18 for a weeklong drill, returning home the following Monday. Enlistment is forbidden from August until after the camp to avoid excess recruits.
Lincoln Neb July 11 The leading democrats of Nebraska arrange a special Pullman sleeper train to New York for the reception of William J Bryan The trip aims for Nebraskans to reach New York August 31 about 300 home folks are expected to greet Bryan on the pier.
Cleveland July 11 only two witnesses were on the stand today as the federal grand jury resumed the investigation of alleged violations of interstate commerce laws by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railway and Standard Oil. Subpoenas were issued for several witnesses including M G Vilas treasurer and auditor of Standard Oil. The world moves and so does the Lawrence Transfer Co. Good assortment of nuts dipped in chocolate at Wiedemann's.
The seventh annual reunion of the Twentieth Kansas Infantry USA will be in Pittsburg Kansas August 7 and 6 at Lincoln Park A civil war veteran reunion is planned same time with a large attendance and a varied program A business meeting and smoker will occur the evening of the sixth The Kansas regiment veterans will come in khaki uniforms made famous in the Philippines and reenact exploits The most prominent members have pledged to attend
A new suburban line from Kansas City reaches Olathe with two more cars due. Trains run to Lenexa now and will extend to Olathe as the track to the city limits is completed. Olatha residents expect KC commuters to move outward as Olathe grows into a bustling residence area.
State fish and game warden Travis met with Attorney General Cole in Topeka over Lawrence residents disobeying game laws. Five men were arrested for market fishing. one trial saw Judge Rillog rule the state law unconstitutional and release the offenders. Other Lawrence cases were to be dismissed in district court.
In the office of Jones and Hosford this morning a party sought to rent a modern house. Two inquiries followed and the firm reports more applications than houses. A waiting list covers a page in their book, with no vacancies. They seek houses or rooms for good rentals and warn vacant properties are in demand this summer.
The first home gown melons of the year arrived this morning courtesy of G C Thomas. Thomas notes a large crop soon to follow and promises melons will be ready for market shortly. Also advertised are floor paints and varnishes from Raymond and March Floor, plus a vacation notice for Frank Charles Endacott at Hermann's collar factory and a need for a woman to do plain sewing at Eldridge House.
New York July 11 The New York Times quotes a London interview with William Jennings Bryan disputing Roosevelt’s fitness. Bryan says Roosevelt’s reforms lack a mandate and that a Democratic president in 1908 would pursue broader welfare reforms, differing from Roosevelt’s platform.
Alex Brown was arrested in Lone Star yesterday on a charge of assaulting Nick Tempie. He was brought to town, trial set for July 1x, and released on bond.
F W Sarteldes shattered Merchants alleys scoring record last night with an individual 4 0 score. The crowd cheered as Barteldes received widespread congratulations for the historic mark, marking an unprecedented achievement in the local event.
The latest statistics report 170 marriages and 143 deaths in Douglas County last year including 90 marriages in Lawrence and 3 and 10 deaths respectively. The enumeration is not complete with several deaths unreported and births hard to capture, making full accuracy nearly impossible.
A county teachers’ exam puzzled participants as they failed to identify the Andover Band among questions linking Chester I Long and Horace Greeley. Superintendent Bowman admitted ignorance on the term. the Journal remains unsure which guess came closest. Meanwhile a house boat from Topeka arrived and was towed around the dam and on to St Louis, with Bates and seven boys proceeding to Kansas City and then St Louis aboard a larger river vessel.
The newspaper notes strong interest in library voting but says voters overlook the best source of support. Merchants listed regularly are willing to provide votes to buyers, but few calls have been made. Voters should post their friends to obtain coupons from merchants who will distribute them.
Barteldes beat Kuhne 383 to 2803 in a tournament game on the MM A A &lleys. Barteldes rolled a season high 52 pins for a record game on the alleys. Uhrlaub led Kuhne with 495.
A large cylinder of natural gas from wells near Kansas City was sent to the State University in Lawrence under university directions. Professors will use the gas for further analysis of wells across the state following recent Dexter work.
Adjutant General Drain of Washington state has been tendered and accepted the new post of United States Attorney for the United States court in China and Korea as provided by the late congress.
The gasoline launch Asleep, owned by Bush Connelly and built entirely by local workmen, was launched yesterday below the dam and operated perfectly. Several short trips have been made and plans for a voyage to New Orleans are underway.
The MCA gymnasium hosts a Thursday program in the business men's class with an hour assembly from 7:45 to 8:45 for regular interclass drills. Neely Okerblad, physical director, will give an 8:15 to 8:20 demonstration on proper volleyball play followed by a 8:20 to 9:20 best two out of three games between KU customer school and the business men's class.
Mrs Christiana Hutchinson widow of John Hutchinson died Saturday in St Louis Missouri of heart failure. The body will be brought here for burial and the funeral will take place tomorrow from the train at 10.

Judge Landis in Chicago federal court fined Chicago and Alton road 20,000 on each of two counts totaling 40,000 for illegal rebates. Ex-officials Jobo Falthon and Fred A Wann received 5,000 fines each across two counts, totaling 10,000, with all ten indictments under review and appeals promised by the defendants.
The unnamed assailant killed Minnie Elliston of Ellsworth Wisconsin to steal 2000 from her after she checked into the National Hotel in Minneapolis. A Milwaukee man registered at the hotel and fled the scene. no trace found. Conductor NM Riggs, from Elroy Wisconsin, accused by Elliston family and to be brought to Minneapolis for examination.
Omaha dispatch reports Hugh Hennings former city treasurer for six years and Republican mayoral candidate last spring killed himself at his home this morning by shooting in the head. No cause is assigned.
July 11 report says an attempt to assassinate Vice Admiral Choukinen, commander of the Black Sea fleet, wounded him and sent him to a hospital in Sevastopol. Also noted is a farm crime in Walterboro where J W Knnegan killed his wife and four children with an axe, with authorities stating probable insanity.

Thomas Taggart, president of the French Lick Springs hotel company, refused today to be examined under oath by the state auditor and attorney general. He argued that state officers may examine hotel company books but cannot compel a corporation’s officers to testify under oath.
