Students shine during summer with support of area agencies
Kennedy School hosts a lively summer program thanks to a coalition of partners. About 120 students attend daily activities run by certified teachers and AmeriCorps, including a summer library, story hours, book clubs, Marathon Club and Kids in the Kitchen classes. The effort, supported by Communities in Schools of Northeast Kansas and Harvesters, aims to prevent summer learning loss and provide healthy, engaging activities, transforming Kennedy from years past when most students were eligible for free lunches.

Kansas State Board pushes 656 million funding boost
The Kansas State Board of Education votes 7-3 to seek a 656 million funding increase for fiscal year 2015, arguing the gap between enacted lawmakers budget and statutory spending. Critics warn it implies a large tax rise, while Gov. Brownback faces a legislature focused on tax cuts and trimmed spending.
