Storms swept through Lawrence with heavy rain hail and two tornadoes. Spotters warned funnels near KPL plant and Lawrence Municipal Airport. First tornado touched down near the plant at 11:35, stayed briefly. A second tornado touched down south of the airport at 12:15, on the ground for about a minute.
Lawrence firefighters rescue four children ages 4, 7, 10 and 12 trapped as floodwater rose in a basement with no interior access. They cut through the floor to reach them as water climbed to the children’s shoulders. In a separate rescue, Catherine Johnson and Candice Winter climbed a tree when their car was swept off a road. a deputy found them around 5:55 a.m. and a boat was needed to extract them as floodwaters moved swiftly.
A tornado touched down at 12:15 a.m. near the Airport Motel on U.S. Highway 2440, ripping off the roof of the four-room unit and prompting guests to move to another area. No injuries were reported as emergency staff assessed the damage and planned a new roof.
KDHE Secretary Robert Harder aimed to revoke Tree House Child Care Center in Lawrence after inspections found 42 alleged violations of state rules. Center owners appeal the order, with a preliminary hearing set for Tuesday. KDHE cites missing medical documents, unlocked medicines, staff training records, and insufficient staff ratios among deficiencies. County inspectors conducted May inspections. center disputes overzealous county criticism.
