Tree destruction plea yields jail time and fine
Marvin L. Tarpy age 27 of 1316 Conn. was sentenced to 90 days in jail and $260 restitution for mutilating and demolishing more than a dozen trees in Lawrence's South Park in late June. He pleaded guilty to criminal destruction of property, reduced from felony destruction, and may work part of his sentence with the city park department. Authorities arrested him after a report of a man tearing at tree limbs. five trees were destroyed and ten damaged.

Arts Center Plans Two Fund Raising Efforts
Lawrence Arts Center outlines two fundraisers this month to raise 20 000 for renovations. Sailed for Hawaii Ends in Whale Collision at Sea
A Del Mar family on a 46 foot sloop Atorrante were rescued 300 miles offshore after a whale collision sank their boat during a San Diego to Honolulu voyage timed to the Transpac race. Nany Sherman 44 and her sons Jim 18 Jeff 15 were saved with three other crew. no injuries reported. The Swiftsure, a racing yacht, towed them and continued toward Hawaii after the distress call.
