Allied troops American British and Canadian land on Sicily in a dawn assault stretching over 100 miles with naval air support. Eisenhower heads a force drawn partly from Tunisia as Rome warns of counterattacks and Allied air raids target Taormina and key air bases in Sicily.
London reports from July 10 describe intense fighting in Sicily as Allied invasion forces press coastal assaults. Roosevelt cites Vatican neutrality to be respected as Sicily action unfolds. Italian and German commanders coordinate defense with Kesselring and Richthofen linked to southern Italy operations.

Applications must be filed before induction notice arrives, with employer letters, then a Topeka review and one day Kansas City physical. If accepted, men go to Kansas City, then draft board swearing into Sea Bees earns $28 to $76 more.
Salina July 10 three Kansans Don Wy man of Hutchinson Clyde E Janon of Herington and Joan Little of Wichita won the League of Nations association essay contest conducted in Kansas by the Federation of Women's Clubs. Prizes were 150 honorary scholarships at Kansas Wesleyan University. Seniors from 30 schools entered the contest held in March. Kansas had 5 no national winners.

Dr. Homer Kingsley Ebright Baker University professor to begin duties as governor of Rotary International district 123 with an all day meeting at Hotel Eldridge. Deane W. Malott has been appointed as educational chief for the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command. The command directs all ground training and runs schools nationwide. The appointment will not pull him from Lawrence or affect university duties.
War Department lists Sergeant Clyde R. Garrett of Overbrook as one of five Kansans held prisoners in Germany. He is the only prisoner from this local area, the notice states.

Kansas City Kansas July 10 Republican and Democratic nominees for congressman from the Second Kansas district will be chosen at conventions of congressional committees. The meeting times and locations were set with potential nominees including Mrs Guyer Rep Hagman Scrivner Hudson McDonald Little Payne and Drennan. The special election is scheduled for September 14 with delegates allocated by county vote totals.
George Marauardt of Baldwin announced the Douglas County Republican delegation to the Paola convention. The 10 member slate includes Mrs. Marcella Arndt of Lawrence as vice chair, plus J. B. Wilson C B Hosford W H Robb Arthur Petefish Mrs Tucile McCreath Mrs Sallie Ewing Ruth Van Tries and Augusta Baker all of Lawrence with Frank McDonald as Democratic chair stating turnout details remain unsettled.
The U S Navy reports a second bombardment of Japanese positions on Kiska Island in the Aleutians within three days. Shells struck the Gertrude Cove area as shore batteries replied with no damage.
The local rationing board will start accepting No 3 ration book applications around August 1 with possible October 1 issuance. Chief clerk George Wetzel said applications are reviewed locally but processed at the state file room in Wichita.

Polish President Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz designated Stanislaw Mikolajczyk as prime minister of the Polish government in exile in London. Douglas county welfare reports 556 relief cases on June 1 this year, down from 837 in 1942, a drop of 281 or over one third. Old age assistance fell to 386, dependent children 45, blind 27, and general assistance 98, with declines across each category. The welfare director cites better employment and improving conditions for children, plus staff reductions of five, with none replaced.
The local board reports Sam Junior Jones of Ft. Scott was inducted into the army on June 17 and sent to Ft. Leavenworth. LeRoy Raymond, 1336 Tennessee, was inducted June 28 and sent to Ft. Snelling, Minn. Lloyd Bell Jr., 986 Ohio, was inducted July 5 and sent to Farragut, Ida.
