Spearman remembered as Lawrence civil rights pioneer
Colleagues recall former Lawrence civil rights leader Spearman after the death of 19 year old Ricky Dowdell at a police incident. The backlash included fire bombings and shootings, fueling a four day disturbance that claimed Nick Rice, an 18 year old EU freshman. Spearman, described as a calm, cooperative figure who also championed integration and housing, helped lead protests for an integrated pool and served on the Lawrence Human Relations Commission from 1966 to 1969. He worked with the NAACP and Concerned Black Parents, and was praised by lawmakers and family for his lasting impact on Lawrence.
