Governors urge passage of Senate farm bill at White House

Kansas Governor Bennett said governors from both parties told President Carter not to veto the Senate farm bill and to push its passage in the House. He reported Carter gave an “empty vessel” reply and did not commit to loan relief or farm-price support. The governors planned a dinner at the White House before a discussion with energy adviser James Schlesinger.

Soviet Union forecasts larger grain crop in 1977

The Agriculture Department said Soviet officials project a 1977 grain output of about 224 million tons, up 10 million from USDA’s earlier forecast thanks to favorable weather. The estimate includes 110 million tons of wheat and 100 million tons of coarse grains, with miscellaneous items making up the rest.

Justifiable homicide ruled in Pringle death

Douglas County Attorney Mike Malone announced that Joseph David Pringle died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen during an argument at a Mobile home. He was 20 and residents said the shot was fired by his father to stop him from harming his mother after he threatened to kill her. The victim reportedly told officers he did not want anyone prosecuted.
