Red Spy Suspect Asserts French Asylum Granted

Russian-born George Zlatovski, indicted in New York on an espionage charge for the Soviet Union, says France granted political asylum to him and his wife Jane. A Foreign Ministry spokesman denied it. The United States has not yet requested extradition, though moves are under way. The case is under discussion by the U S Embassy and the French Foreign Ministry. If a request arrives, French procedure would apply and the court would have three weeks to decide. Zlatovski, 47, a former U S Army intelligence lieutenant, told a Paris interview that France has given asylum and that they are guests of the country. The couple, both indicted by a federal grand jury, live above a shop selling abstract paintings. The U S government links them to an international spy ring led by Jack Soble, awaiting sentencing.
