Curtis said the amendment is needed to extend federal road funding beyond 1929 after review with the Bureau of Public Roads and the Agriculture Department. Prospects for a special legislative session rose as House votes favored and Senate votes narrowly opposed the session.

New Bids Sought for South Lawrence Fire Station
Mayor Rankin announced after bids were opened for the new two story brick and tile station north of Hellowy's store. An estimated 7901 bushels of soft red wheat were received at three Lawrence elevators on Saturday, mostly excellent quality. Farmers benefited from a 15 cent per bushel premium as moisture varied. Kansas City market lowered by 5 to 7 cents, priced around 1.25 for moisture-dented grain and 1.10 for hard wheat per bushel. With continued dry weather, farmers expect progress toward completion in about two weeks. Some producers loaded directly from binder threshing to market, bypassing shocks.
