German papers warn that anarchist threats target Hans Von Mier Bach amid concerns of planned violence. The report calls the assassination attempt only the start of broader dangers to the German political figure.
Ambassador Francis reports from Vologda that Moscow saw street fighting after a German envoy Von Mierbach was assassinated on July 6. Czecho-Slovak forces ousted Bolsheviks in Vladivostok by June 29, with allied naval guards reinforcing consulates and war supplies. Ukrainian government resigns. M. Washington July 9 The department of agriculture forecast prospective crops for 1918 based on conditions July 1. Corn harvest expected at 3 160 000 000 bushels the largest on record with acreage 113 835 000. Wheat total 891 000 000 bushels. Barley rye sweet potatoes and rice also indicated to set new records. Only half as much wheat remained on farms as last year and quality was poor relative to five year average.
Postmaster C C Secwir reports a July 1 pay increase across the local post office. Twenty six employees gain 200 a year, including thirteen carriers and eleven clerks, with the raise applying to those earning 2200 or less. Other staff see 20 percent to 5 percent boosts by salary range, and those under 800 gain 20 percent.
A southbound streetcar struck a buggy near Seventeenth and Massachusetts yesterday afternoon. The unidentified female rider, Mrs Deihl, was bruised after attempting to pass a wagon and back onto the track. The motorman said the crash occurred when she did not notice the approaching car.
French troops smash toward Antheuil north of Paris with tanks aiding a 2.5 mile front, gaining high ground along the Compiegne road and extending gains southeast toward the Marne front. At least 25 to 100 persons are reported dead and 50 to 75 injured after a head on collision between two Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway passenger trains near Belle Meade Park, Nashville. Reports indicate both white and black victims with sleeping cars largely unharmed. The exact death toll remained unclear at noon.
A former state hospital patient at Ossawatomie died from acute indigestion after doctors found in his stomach a jumble of five dozen items. The mass included sixteen table spoon handles, 1161 wire pieces, eighteen buttons and a buckle. Medical staff labeled the case collective consumption and puzzled over how the buckle was swallowed.
St Louis July 9 Bruce Cameron superintendent of transportation for United Railways Company was indicted yesterday on second degree burglary and larceny charges. He posted bond of 1500 and is at liberty today. He refused to comment. The indictment followed an investigation into theft of petitions for a referendum vote on the United Railways franchise. The text includes garbled remnants of unrelated notes.
Transfers depend on a Topeka public utilities board hearing this afternoon. If a three cent fare rise is granted no city fares will occur. without the raise a five cent fare is likely. Interurban wheels are wider than local ones and may damage pavement until repairs are completed. Washington reports the eight interstate express firms ran a total deficit of 1 637 757 in January 1918. Only Southern Express made a profit of 89 630, while American Express posted a loss of 752 645. Total receipts for the month reached 17 645 000 compared with 15 525 000 a year earlier.
Chester Woodward former Round Corner drug store owner leaves Topeka where he ran a farm loan office for eighteen years to join the military relief department. He will go to France at his own expense, after moving from Lawrence in 1900 to Topeka and then joining the Red Cross.
New York July 9 an appeal to the nations by Cardinals Gibbons Farley and O Connell to pray for the success of American arms was made public last night. The appeal was titled Fight and Pray.
Oats harvested on the A E Shields farm four miles south of Lawence yielded 373 bushels, an average of 91 bushels per acre, breaking all county records. The piece notes locals claim to be bright yet discuss weather as the universal topic.

Lawrence leaders consider protesting Kaw Valley and Western Interurban rate hike. A petition against higher passenger rates over a 25 percent freight rise was sent to Topeka. City officials plan to forward the protest to the Public Utilities Commission, while gas rate talks continue in Kansas City. A milk inspection ordinance, aligned with state dairy board rules, passed last night.
A military funeral for Second Lieutenant C L Cone was held this afternoon at his parents home at 1296 Tennessee Street. He was killed near Fort Sill in an airplane accident Saturday. A state guards platoon escorted the body to Oak Hill cemetery where a firing squad honored him. Taps were sounded and the firebell tolled twenty two times at 3 30 as Mayor Kreeck urged a one minute citywide pause. City officials paid the memory tribute with R E S S Klyne officiating at the residence.
A. Duniway, president of Colorado College, will give two talks this week to promote patriotism through education. He recently completed a tour in the East with large audiences and will address students Thursday at five in the Little Theatre, Green Hall. The second address time will be announced later.
Irven Pribble was arrested this afternoon by Officer Samuel Silverthorn in a rear entrance of an office building on Massachusetts Street. He will be arraigned later this afternoon.
