Man shot by police waives preliminary hearing
Zachary James Ortiz, a 25 year old Lawrence man, waived his preliminary hearing in a five count case after being charged with fleeing and eluding officers driving under the influence criminal threat interference with duties and battery of a law enforcement officer. The case stems from a November 2014 incident when an officer tried to stop Ortiz’s vehicle for excessive noise and erratic movement and he fled, later being stopped on Fall Creek Road. Ortiz also faces a June 2014 aggravated assault charge related to a separate confrontation in which he allegedly pointed a shotgun at an officer and did not drop the weapon. He remains out of jail on a 100000 dollar bond with hearings set for August 28.

Eudora seeks county funds for trained emergency responders
County Administrator Craig Weinang heard Eudora requests for better trained emergency responders to cut response times from over 12 minutes to under four. Ortiz outlined options costing 594,585 in 2016 and 355,007 annually, or three full time staff plus a quick response vehicle, with no patient transport. Thellman supported the need but warned of a major financial commitment amid budget talks and potential property tax impacts.
