Lawrence housing complex eyes 75 million HERE LLC project
Mayor Mike Amyx opposed 95 percent tax abatement while backing 85 percent. Commissioner Jeremy Farmer supported 95 percent. HERE LLC, led by Jim Heffernan, seeks a 95 percent 12 year property tax rebate plus sales tax exemption for the 1101 1115 Indiana St. site across from KU facilities. The plan includes 239 two to four bedroom units, 13,000 square feet of retail, and a 577 space automated parking structure, with rents around 1200 for one bedroom and 2800 for four. Project value is about 75 million, potentially the city’s largest use of an IRB and rebate. The city notes rebates come from new taxes only. existing taxes stay with current bill. City, county, and school district would not fund the rebates. Commission meeting planned for Tuesday at City Hall. county and school board may act later in the month.

Insurance counselors urged to check quit programs coverage
Topeka Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger urges Kansans who smoke or chew tobacco to verify if their plans cover quit programs after a May federal rule requiring employer plans to cover counseling and smoking cessation aids. Plans must cover at least two quit attempts per year, a 90 day FDA approved medication supply, and four counseling sessions. Praeger notes some plans offer additional cessation services beyond FDA approved programs.
