Salina rental dispute spurs civil rights and theft case
In Salina a woman faces charges after a mix up over a rented video tape. Janelle Vandermotten sued in federal court claiming civil rights violations and later filed another suit in Saline County District Court. The case centers on a misreturned tape of Howard the Duck from a Dillon’s store on April 7, 1994, and a subsequent misdemeanor theft charge. Vandermotten says the charge was dropped after she returned the movie, but a January 1995 bench warrant for failure to appear led to her arrest at home. An attorney says the arrest was for ignoring court notices, not for failing to return the tape.

Explosion and Fire Hit Cessna Plant Near Wichita
A small explosion and fire at the Cessna aircraft plant southwest of Wichita injured one worker and led to the evacuation of about 100 others. The burn victim was taken to St Francis Hospital. The blast occurred around 1 30 p m in a bonding room of the assembly facility for Cessna Citations and Caravans. Cause remains unknown.

Topeka police investigated the death of 24 year old Damon K. Alston after a verbal confrontation outside an apartment complex. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 12 05 a.m. Tuesday following a Monday night incident where a group of men approached him.
