City commissioners defer a proposal to close streets for KU home games near 12th Street and Oread Avenue amid neighbor concerns and a bar owner's objections. They approve a special-use permit for Bowersock Mills to build a four story hydroelectric plant on the Kaw riverbank with canoe docks and a fishing platform, and begin the process to issue up to 19 million in industrial revenue bonds to lower borrowing costs. If federal permits come by December 1 and a buyer is found by year end, the plant could be online by mid 2012.
The keynote speaker at a Kansas City town hall, Kathleen Sebelius, urged faster drug development and noted annual approvals have not increased since 1950. She highlighted the NIH FDA partnership to share data earlier in discovery, inform companies sooner what regulators seek, and reduce futile efforts. She praised KU Cancer Center funding and collaboration as key to National Cancer Institute designation and top researcher recruitment.
