Project One gathered Tuesday to urge the Lawrence school board to hire Black educators and a Black counselor at Lawrence High School. Spokesman Edward Daub presented a three page plan seeking two Black hires and broader minority staffing, while Superintendent Carl Knox cited limited offers and higher external salaries as barriers.
The Lawrence board of education approved new classroom hours affecting all levels. Senior high opens at 8 20 a m with an 2 to 3 p m optional period. sophomores attend six periods 8 20 a m to 3 p m. elementary schools start 8 30 a m with bus routes possibly shortening lunch and ending at 3 20 p m. junior highs use staggered hours per site. new teachers include Linda Homeratha Linda S Riley Margaret Coggins Carol Miller India Raw Valley Ellen Freeman H Preston Hubbard Eleanor Lockhart Joan Lundstrom Donna Marston Judith Day Debra Freeland.
Kansas Universitys task force on financial aid held its first meeting Tuesday. Chancellor Laurence Chalmers outlined concerns and the group charges. James K. Hitt, acting chairman, listed five focus areas including need in student employment and evaluating new aid ideas for minorities transfers and middle income students. The panel will form subgroups to study these topics and reassess overall aid programs.
The district accepted a low bid of 5 799.05 from Apex Class and Fence Co. for fencing at six schools Riverside West Junior High Hillcrest New York Broken Arrow and Senior High except Woodlawn where fencing is deferred. A portable classroom trailer at 10 460 will be delivered first week in September near the Senior High.
The Lawrence Human Relations Commission will show the television program Black History Lost Stolen or Strayed at its regular meeting at 8 tonight in city offices. The hour long film is narrated by comedian Bill Cosby. The Perry Lake area reports fair to good fishing with water .06 foot below the 891.5 foot normal pool. Rainfall around the 12,500 acre lake 16 miles NW of Lawrence totals about 1.5 inches in the past week. Water is murky with some debris. A next to last summer concert will be at 8 p.m. Thursday in South Park by local American Federation of Musicians members and free to attend.
Lawrence firemen extinguished two car fires. The first at 8:28 a.m. at the College Motel 1703 W Sixth caused about 200 dollars in damage to a car owned by Robert W Wilson of Detroit Michigan. The second fire around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday damaged a car owned by Robert A Berger at 1644 Barker with about 100 dollars in damage.
About 101000 employed New Yorkers admit using marijuana LSD methamphetamine or heroin regularly during work hours according to the state Narcotic Addiction Control Commission. The report says at least 362000 working people in the state used illegal drugs regularly at least six times a month, on or off the job.
About 500 youths clashed with Omaha Police during an 8 p.m. curfew at Memorial Park. Police and youths exchanged rocks and bottles, several youths and two officers injured, 25 arrests reported. traffic on Dodge Street disrupted as crowds blocked the road.
Sheriff reports two cattle thefts in Douglas County. A 12 year old Angus Holstein cross cow valued at 300 dollars disappeared from Gilbert Johnson farm two miles west of Lecompton. A 10 month old registered Holstein heifer valued at 500 dollars was taken from Roy Crawford farm near Globe, southwest Douglas County. Owner is Dee Ann Shuck of Ottawa.
An Illinois woman, Carolyn Smith, 20, of Kell, TH, was injured eight miles west of the West Lawrence interchange on the Kansas Turnpike. Her car went out of control while passing a truck on a wet roadway, rolled through the median, and rested in a ditch. She was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with head cuts and a possible back injury. Damages were estimated at 750 dollars.
AP reports Kansas highway death log records 2 fatalities in the 24 hours ending 9 am Wednesday. July figures show 15 deaths for July and 328 deaths for 1971.
Douglas County Commissioners approve relocating a one mile section of county road 389 also called East 31st due to dangerous conditions. Bids open July 21 and the road will be renumbered county road 699 after relocation.
Rich ard Neal King 2009 Schwarz Rd Lawrence, a Lawrence High School senior, disappeared after a sailboat capsized at Douglas County State Lake. His sister Diane 14 and Debbie Goldsmith 16 were aboard. divers from multiple agencies examined water up to 40 degrees to locate the body as search teams extended efforts.
Dr. William Hambleton of the Kansas State Geological Survey urged engineering safety into a Lyons salt depot plan before use. Speaking to about 20 Sierra Club members in Westminster Center, he warned of long term radioactivity and water contamination risks, noting gaps in salt rock and containment studies.
