News from Tokyo notes a major Red offensive in Korea with a possible 90 000 North Korean attack on the Kum river line. American tanks arrive but action details remain undisclosed as Pyongtaek and nearby fronts see heavy fighting and pincer moves toward Taejon Chungju and Ansong.
Washington July 7 Administration officials assess the Korean War as a long costly conflict for the United States. The outlook implies sustained American force buildup, greater needs for money and munitions, and potential industrial mobilization to ensure weapon production across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. President Truman signsaled few concrete measures, leaving open a possible future special appropriation and national guard call.
Three people were killed and three injured in a two car collision on U.S. Highway 36 six miles west of Norton Kansas. The dead were Mr and Mrs Jack Conboy of Millbrae California and Kate M Kuch of Marshall Missouri. Injured were Cathy Conboy and two Conboy children as well as Arvid Brown and another, all in serious condition. The Iowa car was eastbound. the California car was returning from Knobnoster Missouri. Sheriff E W Moody investigated.
Moscow accuses the United States of a new act of aggression by blockading Korea and vows to hold Washington responsible for any damage to Soviet interests. The note to the American embassy rejects the June 27 Security Council resolution as illegal, citing the absence of the Soviet Union and China at the meeting.
President Truman asked Congress to approve 260 million dollars to accelerate the atomic bomb program and expand hydrogen bomb experiments. He said funds will help the AEC build more efficient facilities to fulfill his January 31 directive urging work on all atomic weapons and to pursue peaceful uses of atomic energy. He voiced confidence in acting chairman Summer T. Pike, whose term has expired and whose confirmation vote was scheduled for Monday.
The state emergency fund committee will meet July 11 in Topeka to consider a request by the board of regents for an emergency appropriation of 155.00 dollars to repair hail storm damage at Kansas State College in Manhattan. The committee, led by the governor, includes the lieutenant governor, state auditor, speaker of the house, and senate and house ways and means chairmen.
Lake Success July 7 United Nations Security Council voted 7 to 0 for a British French resolution authorizing a unified command in Korea and asking the United States to designate the commander. Three nations were absent India Egypt and Yugoslavia. The United States was expected to name General Douglas MacArthur immediately. The council also authorized the use of the blue and white UN flag in combat for the first time.
Mrs. Zola Cheever of Leavenworth sues E. G. Morrison for 12800 citing injuries from a May 21 auto accident on Highway 40. She alleges Morrison's car slid off the road during a rain and wind storm, hitting her parked vehicle while she was a passenger. Attorney George K. Melvin represents Cheever.
Washington July 7 UP The government ordered the use of the draft to add about 600000 men to the armed services while voluntary enlistments were invited. The move aims to reach full strength for operations in Korea as defense ceilings on personnel were lifted. Army Navy and Air Force show a drive to expand beyond current totals to sustain units in Korea. The Selective Service system continues registering youths with 7,638,000 classified and 1140600 in 1-A, available for service.
Weathermen report fair and pleasant conditions for much of the United States with warm, humid South and scattered showers in the north Atlantic to central plains. Central regions see more showers while the far western states record highs around 102 to 105 degrees.
Chicago July 7 The AFL switchmen called off their 12 day strike against four of five major railroads after President Truman labeled the action unjustified and threatened drastic measures. The Rock Island line remains on strike. Western Pacific Great Northern Denver and Rio Grande Western and Chicago Great Western moved to resume service while the Rock Island continues the walkout.
A Missouri Pacific Eagle train in Huron, Kansas struck a stalled truck, killing Esther Geneva Daniels of Atchison and injuring two of her children, Glenn Michael seven in critical condition and Bruce Douglas four with serious injuries. husband Glenn Daniels escaped. infant Virginia Marie remained at home. Conductor H M Dougherty reported speeds around 65 mph at impact. Washington dispatch notes postmaster nominations for Kansas.
Topeka reports the Kansas weather pattern showing little immediate change with partly cloudy conditions tonight and tomorrow. Robb notes low temperatures 62 to 68, highs Saturday 90s in southeast to 50s in northwest, with only minor day to day shifts through next Wednesday and 0.25 to 1 inch of rainfall possible as late thundershowers. Last night light showers occurred in south central Kansas with Wichita 0.14 inch, Anthony 0.02, Dodge City trace. yesterday’s highs ranged 74 to 87, with Leavenworth at 65 overnight.
Police logged two crashes on Massachusetts Street within ten minutes last night. At 7:30 pm Irma Schnoke of Ottawa hit Martha Weston of Hill Crest trailer camp as Weston backed from the curb on 733 Massachusetts Street. both cars had minor damage. Ten minutes later Charles Coffman of East Nineteenth Street collided with A E Rubins of 1730 Michigan Street near Nineteenth and Massachusetts as Coffman tried to turn. both cars suffered dented fenders. Open evenings and Sundays Cole's Food Center, 2nd & Lincoln.
Clear skies put Douglas county combines into high gear today as wheat and oats rolled into elevators in Lawrence at top speed. Potatoes digging reached a new high with at least four groups in the fields. The Raymond lines on Route 3 near finish. others digging include Emil Hecks Route 3 Marl Nehrbass Route 5 who began on 35 acres yesterday and Altenbernd brothers Route 2. Brune brothers start Monday after oats. Potatoes still yield well. rat damage limited to a few low spots. Red War bas fully matured and selling well. Nehrbass says plenty of help available. Wheat prices slipped three cents to 1.96. Lawrence elevators report weeds in some loads. J Underwood and Sons bought two loads of Cherokee oats testing heavy 35 pounds per bushel.
The Rev. Daniel Knox Ford of Westside Presbyterian church will speak at union services in South Park Sunday night at 7 30 pm. The Rev. George C. Fetter of First Baptist church will lead worship. If rain, services move to Trinity Lutheran church.
Valley Forge Pa July 7 The largest youth gathering in the western hemisphere ends as 47 000 Boy Scouts disperse by train bus and auto mobile. By nightfall most of the knee pants group will be home in 48 states four U S territories and 19 other nations. The second national jamboree wound up with the final of four assemblies in the hillside arena.
County Engineer Joe Rice announced a temporary detour on the Lone Star road due to early week grading and a 8.4 mile blacktop project. Motorists from Lawrence to Lone Star or the county lake should use Highway 59 to near Hillview golf course, then west over Brown's Grove bridge to reconnect with Lone Star road. When the full stretch is closed locals only may access the road, with the lake route via Duver's Station as the alternative. The project is expected to take about three months and cost around $56,000, with detour signs guiding drivers as work progresses.
Melvin Zack, director, says the band has about 15 students and invites any interested adults to join. Rehearsals are held every Wednesday at 8 pm in the grade school building in Eudora.
Lawrence residents weigh an $80,000 bond issue to finish the police and fire station at Eighth and Kentucky streets. If approved, the extra money funds a training tower for firemen, police facilities, dedicates rooms, and essential plumbing and electrical upgrades. If rejected, the project remains unfinished and future plans stall.
State Treasurer mailed quarterly fifth cent gasoline tax checks totaling 1 125 000 to Kansas counties and cities. Lawrence to get 3713 96 and Douglas county 8743 32. Wichita and Kansas City led city payments with 37214 94 and 29764 16 respectively. Local offices awaited deliveries this afternoon and further totals for Compton Eudora Baldwin were pending.

Hutson a Lawrence native long operated Hotel Eldridge and ranks nationally. chaired A M E O hotel group four years and led Kansas City and Kansas hotel associations two years each. He doubled the typical term as A M E O president setting a record.
