President Wilson finished his message to Congress on board the George Washington Sea outlining a call for an open session to discuss the treaty. The address emphasizes transparency and formal debate ahead of ratification.
President Wilson will address the senate on the peace treaty and the league of nations at 12 15 today at the White House. The presidential fleet has reached New York harbor and is expected to dock at Hoboken Tuesday afternoon with a welcome for Wilson and his party.
Washington July 7 The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a 2.00 per car fee for hay and straw held for inspection when disposition orders are not furnished by 6 PM the day of inspection. Flat 2.00 per car applies when hay or straw is held for inspection with no time limit. Service in setting out such cars not basis for extra charges. no charge when inspected on terminal tracks or yards for convenience.
The university announces Sev erien Z. Herb as director of the university band and string bass instructor, with Gustav Soderlund joining as piano and organ instructor. Herb, a Russian who came to the United States in 1905, and Soderlund bring international experience. Enrollment in fine arts is expected to rise toward 300 with band students receiving reduced tuition and the new Administration Building hosting practice rooms and studios. The men's glee club will reappear next year after wartime disruption.
Thieves raided W. A. Noland's chicken yard just north of Lawrence last night taking 35 young Plymouth Rocks. Sheriff Woodward was notified but no trace of the thieves or direction of escape was found this morning.
A single wheat load arrived today with a stated weight of per bushel. The report notes a low crop grade for the day's harvest, reflecting diminished quality in the grain sample.
Wheat in Douglas county is reported to yield 15 bushels per acre or less, with rust smut and damp grain lowering quality. The R-34 was torn from its moorings by a violent gust. 300 men held ropes to prevent it from drifting away as engineers work to overhaul the airship. Major G A Scott said the craft would start its return journey at 5 tomorrow morning but weather and repairs slow progress.
A Kansas City picnic party near Linwood witnessed the drowning of C. E. Wood of Des Moines after cramps pulled him under while swimming four miles east of Lawrence. Wood, a large man, got into deep water. Carey tried to help but could not pull him to safety. The body was recovered the next day by W. C. Wise and taken to Leavenworth for coroner inquiry. Wood was visiting the Careys.
W. H. Coultis was arrested this morning charged with disturbing the peace in an assault on Sol Wertz. Wertz says he lent Coultis money last winter and, after demanding repayment, was struck in the face and ordered off the plate with threats. Wertz bears a G. A. R. button. Coultis is described as a young man.
Former agents will attend a meeting at Ottawa tomorrow with Douglas County farm agent Ernest Ptacek. The session aims to exchange views and improve the service provided by county farm agents across the region.
New York July 7. William Allen White editor of the Emporial Gazette returns from the peace conference aboard the Baltic. He predicts England will have the first established soviet government in a loyal form without disorders and without the king losing his job. The king is playing with radicals while the Prince of Wales stays connected with the poorer classes. Conditions in England are chaotic. labor is in the saddle and veterans demand democracy.
In Toledo July 7 rumors spread that Jess Willard had died from Dempsey punishment as checks on gate receipts for the Dempsey Willard fight show expected revenue below 500000. Tex Rickard said the arena will be sold to the high bidder and souvenir hunters swarmed the wrecking area guarded by twenty policemen. Willard plans to return home after healing.
The twelfth annual encampment of United Spanish War Veterans of the Kansas department will be held July 16 and 17 in Topeka. The first session starts at 11 o'clock at Memorial Hall, with department headquarters in Memorial Hall. O. A. Faulk is department commander and Douglas A. Graham is department adjutant.
