Squirrel blamed for sparking fire near Langston Hughes School

A brush and grass fire west of Langston Hughes School prompted evacuation orders as flames spread along vegetation beneath a power line near Bob Billings Parkway east of Kansas Highway 10. Fire officials say the fire, sparked by a squirrel, was contained by early afternoon with no injuries or home damage reported.

Record Heat Persists Across Kansas In 2012

Court has no timetable for SLT decision

City officials and observers await a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals on the South Lawrence Trafficway through the Baker Wetlands. Judges heard the case in mid January and, with about 8000 pages in the file, speculation on timing varied. A court spokesman said only the three judges know when a judgment will be entered and a decision could come any time as the court operates year round.
