KU group fights for endangered fish
KU researchers push to save the chubby shiner once common in Kansas streams. From 2002 to today the population rose from about 300 shin ers to nearly 20 000 yet the species remains at risk, endangered by broader ecological loss. Prof. deNoyelles urges that protecting one species helps many others and the human benefit is clear. EVA Carpenter, a Columbia University student, joins KU for a 10 week Summer research program and says the issue matters beyond the fish.

Researchers explain decline of the Topeka shiner in Kansas
Kansas University scientists from the Kansas Biological Survey study 77 ponds to test how pond environments affect Topeka shiner spawning. Using underwater video, they observe shiners during summer and modify gravel, predator presence, and fish density. They note shiners nest in sunfish nests and mainly inhabit headwaters, with erosion and drought cited as possible threats and regulation of headwaters proposed for protection.
