Patriotism on parade in Old West Lawrence Fourth of July event
About 75 children and parents gathered with decorated bicycles costumes and musical instruments to celebrate the nation’s birthday in Old West Lawrence. A three hour rain delay did not dampen spirits as organizers planned a neighborhood tradition that could spread to other Lawrence neighborhoods next year.

Elm disease scare recalls Lawrence elm epidemic years ago
Bonner Springs reports Dutch elm disease could kill about 100 trees in the area, reviving memories of the Kansas elm epidemic that devastated Lawrence in the late 1950s and 1960s. Thousands of elms were lost, DDT spraying was used then halted, and replacement species now shade the landscape.

Wall Street Journal editorials in decline 1996 critique
Mark Shields argues the Wall Street Journal editorial page, once a force for conservative ideas since 1980, has fallen into bile and invective in 1996. He cites Gary Aldrich's FBI background, questions sourcing, and the Journal’s handling of Clinton and Dole coverage, calling for accountability and return to ideas over scandal.

Don Marquis argues against Mona Charen’s July 4 column claiming marriage’s sole aim is childbirth. He contends the state has HIV prevention interests and that freedom effects allow homosexual marriage. He warns Charen’s view leads to absurdities and notes letters to the Journal-World policy and submission requirements.
