London reports show robot bombs killed 2,752 and sent 8,000 to hospitals over three weeks. Churchill announced London evacuations, shelter use, and a large scale Allied bombing response while stressing resolve and ongoing Normandy and German targets.
Rome July 6 Allied updates report Indian troops near Umbertide on the upper Tiber moving toward Florence with Fifth Army pressing along the west coast amid stiff German resistance. U S units along the coast face heavy artillery and anti tank fire as inland fighting continues near Castellina and Morte Catini. Umbertide junction was reached after Fifth Army momentum and Eighth Army actions southeast of Florence, with further advances near Ancona and Numana along the Adriatic. RAF bombers hit Verona rail yards while Allied air forces claim losses but report overall pressure on German positions.
London reports bombardment by pilotless craft causing widespread damage and civilian casualties. Americans and other allied personnel are cited among the dead or wounded as theaters and cinemas remain open despite the strikes. Five Lawrence guardsmen Maj Harold K Snider Lt Mahlon Ball First Sgt Raymond McCabe Sgt Harold C Johnson and Sgt Lewis Arnold will travel to Fort Riley for a week of intensive training with Seventh Service Command instructors. The program previews the Kansas State Guard annual encampment at Fort Riley in August and involves bayonet rifle grenades pistol and submachine gun practice bivouac and gas drill as part of a 150 officer training cadre for about 1 500 men. The post has historic ties to Kansas National Guard units and Col Charles H Browne commands the State Guard from Horton Kansas.
Mrs. Louella Orwell Dalton aged 76 died at noon at her son W. B. Dalton’s home in Lawrence after an eight year illness. Survived by daughter Mrs. Marley Brown of Portland and another daughter in Kansas City. funeral arrangements to be announced. Dalton was an accomplished accompanist pianist and organist active in Kansas City and Lawrence music circles.
Washington July 6 The special senate fuel investigating committee will meet in Kansas City July 17 to review the Hugoton to Blackwell gas line progress and the Blackwell to Independence segment. Sen Clyde M Reed Kansas notes only 65 million cf daily to Blackwell while 235 to 240 million cf are needed and coal output in district 15 lagged 50 000 tons last year yet mild winter prevented hardship. Reed will be joined by Sen Kenneth Wherry of Nebraska with attendance of other members pending.
Major Robert R. Corey visiting his mother in London described robot bomb assaults as officials censored details. He said Londoners, unprepared for strikes, grew bomb conscious again and returned to subways and bomb shelters as attacks continued day and night. An additional Douglas County board issue noted 85 certificates for vehicle tires and related items.
Topeka July 6 The Weatherman noted warm temperatures and generally favorable harvest weather in Kansas. Eastern areas need rain for corn and pastures, but overall readings ranged from 65 to 92 degrees with brisk winds. Only trace rain was reported in Goodland as showers promised earlier did not materialize.

Alexander Schneider violin and Ralph Kirkpatrick harpsichord join for a Fraser theater recital July 13 at the University of Kansas. The event is funded in part by Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge with the university covering the rest. Admission is 60 cents. faculty receive complimentary tickets via the Fine Arts office.
