Allied forced led by British and American air power pressed Rommel along the Egyptian front. British and U S warplanes bombed supply lines and communications while Auchinleck’s troops attacked in all day fighting near El Alamein.
The navy announced U S submarines sank three Japanese destroyers and left a fourth burning during an July 4 attack off the Aleutians. Army bombers also attacked transports and escort vessels at Aggatu and Agatta on July 2.
Hutchinson Kansas July 6 Wheat storage pressures rise as combines work Reno county fields. Hutchinson holds 14,000,000 bushels full and county elevators near capacity. New crop not yet piled locally but large stacks appear on farms. Contraction receipts reach 991 cars over the 4th of July holiday as moisture hampers harvest.
War Production Chief Donald M. Nelson told a senate agriculture subcommittee that a bill creating a rubber supply agency to produce synthetic rubber from grain would trap critical materials like copper and steel and remove presidential control of priorities. He urged deferring action while offering objections and noting a 700000 ton production goal.

Gerhard Wilhelm Kunze described as former leader of the German American Bund faced a federal bail of 50 000 after arraignment on a charge of failing to notify his draft board of his whereabouts. He is under Hartford indictment for espionage act violations and faces possible penalties up to five years and 5 000 dollars. He will be moved to Hartford for further arraignment.

Two trucks collided on the Tally creek bridge near the county line closing Highway 59 for about four hours. A gasoline transporter from Ketchum of Chanute lost 800 gallons of its 3700 gallon load but no fire occurred. The accident occurred around 9 am and the span reopened after 1 pm with no injuries. trucks from Baldwin and Ottawa assisted.
Mexico City July 6 United States Secretary of Agriculture Claude R Wickard warned at the inter American agricultural conference that Americans may face shortages by year end and only essentials would be affordable. He noted U S shipments of farm products to Britain and Russia under lend lease and called on other American republics to boost production of rubber coconut palm oils quinine fibers and minerals.
Denver July 6 processors and growers will meet at an American beet sugar industry conference to examine the sugar rationing program. Frank A. Kemp, president of the Great Western Sugar Company and head of the United States Beet Sugar Association, organized the gathering following industry suggestions and requests.
Lieut T Wisner in charge of class V-1 for the central division will not be in Lawrence on Thursday July 9 to interview men for navy plans. A letter from J F Kimball says Wisner cannot come and all V-1 meetings are cancelled for the present.
Topeka July 6 The federal government will pay the largest share of Kansas 1943 relief outlay totaling 20 314 206 with 6 927 989 from federal funds an increase of 843 211 over this year The state will contribute 6 400 507 a reduction of 1 087 167 counties 4 720 327 a decrease of 621 266 Expenditures this year underspent will carry 2 004 647 into next year reducing the overall ad valorem county levy for welfare.
Isely of Dodge City campaigns for U S Senate with focus on small business welfare. He criticizes the administration for harming small businesses while pursuing victory and peace. He cites four sons in military service and plans brief daytime talks in about 12 towns daily and longer evening speeches. He will speak at Woodlawn school grounds at 8 p m and South Park at 8 30 p m Wednesday.
Kansas City reports wheat arrivals down due to storage restrictions and harvest delays. A three day total of 1 448 cars, about 2 116 000 bushels, with Saturday market closure. Elevators hold 36 250 000 bushels, 31 750 000 wheat, full capacity 45 000 000. Mills and private houses rated at 17 000 000 bushels, space also tight.
Army officials announced the bodies of Maj. Gen. Herbert A. Dargue and Capt. James G. Leavitt, killed in December in the March Field transport crash, were found near Kidd mountain high above Big Pine California. One crewman remains missing.
Secretary Ickes told Governor Ratner he was not satisfied with coal handling in Kansas and midwestern states. He urged action to move and store enough coal this summer to prevent a wartime shortage and possible delays in victory. He warned complacency could cause delayed shipments and cold homes in 1942.

Local CAP members from Lawrence attend a state CAP meeting in Topeka with a flight review on the Capitol grounds and a Jayhawk hotel closed session. Miss Grace Hess piloted one Lawrence plane with observer David Brown while Harold Emick and John Emick assisted. Maj. Robert F. Metcalfe announced several contracts in the Camp Funston rebuild plan. J. T. Constant of Lawrence, Kansas, won a 275,929 dollar contract to convert 38 stables into garages and an additional 89,042.50 dollar contract for relocation of utilities. M. W. Watson of Topeka received a 745,181 dollar contract for crushed stone roads tank and motor parks. A July 7 award to L. W. Hites Co. of Kansas City for concrete pavement and driveways would bring the total cost to 465,550 dollars.
A collision today in the Sunflower Ordnance Works area caused minor injuries to drivers James A. Lawrence of Emporia and Benjamin Roberson of 1902 Tennessee. Vehicles included a 1940 DeSoto and a 1935 Plymouth and damage was extensive. Roberson received a cut to his right arm and was transported to the SOW hospital by ambulance.
Scattered light showers and thundershowers are forecast in the southwest portion tonight into Tuesday morning. Not quite as warm in the northeast portion tonight.
