Local Allied forces report successful operations against German positions. The action prompted intensified German counterattacks as veterans note breakthroughs in the front lines and increased artillery exchanges near key objective towns.
German offensive begun March 21 remains stalled with no strategic gains. General Foch strengthens positions, American British French troops hold ground north of Albert and along the Somme. In the week, Allied air forces claim 195 German aircraft. US and Allied forces press on. On the Italian front, Italians secure most of the Piave south bank with limited Austrian resistance.

Two 15 year olds Arthur Gray and Joe Scullan were moved from Topeka to Douglas County jail by a U S marshal on the charge of tampering with United States mail at Omaha. They will stay until a October trial. Miss Mary merger left for Pittsburg for a short visit.

F T Rees named the new Douglas county farm agent and will report for duty July 16 after the farm bureau approved steps. He replaces T E Moore who left during the draft. Rees, Class Four, arrives with wife and two children and seeks a house for his family. He graduated from Manhattan horticulture in 1913 and has taught agriculture in Minnesota since. He previously served as special farm agent in Neosho and Labette counties, boosting local staffing.
Divers searched for more victims of the Columbia disaster on the Illinois river after the steamer struck an obstruction in fog and sank. Rescue efforts brought bodies to shore as officials prepared for government investigation and coroner proceedings in Pekin.
