July 6 Hartpence, a Burlington Kansas native and member of Company A, First Regiment Kansas National Guard, was paralyzed from head to foot after being tossed in a blanket during a camp prank at Fort Riley. He has been in the post hospital since the accident and doctors say recovery is unlikely. The incident was the camp’s only serious accident as women visitors sought a camp photograph. He fell on his neck in the blanket.

Buys Station Site for Kansas City Freight Depot
Work on the new joint interurban freight depot in Kansas City will start about August 1. The property on Wyandotte Street between Third and Fourth is now held by W. D. Klemm, president of the Kansas City Kaw Valley & Western railway. The Depot Carriage and Baggage Company sold it for 33 500, and adjacent property owners agreed to adjust tracks and remove a sidewalk. The depot is expected to energize the surrounding district and may include a refrigerator plant for produce handling.
