Owner forfeits dog in shelter surrender ruling
Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin ruled that Kelli Jackson ended ownership of her dog Maggie when she signed the Lawrence Humane Society surrender form in May. The judge lifted a temporary restraining order blocking destruction as officials deemed the dog vicious, a conclusion Jackson disputes while considering an appeal.

Johns, once a Michigan counselor, moved to Lawrence and became director of Project Freedom. She chairs 10 action committees fighting substance abuse through youth groups, business partners, schools, and religious and criminal justice groups.
