An earthquake shook Lima for 45 seconds causing walls to crack and many flee into the streets. Despite fear of major damage, officials reported only slight damage with several injuries from people slipping during evacuations.
Police Thursday investigated several complaints about careless fireworks use. Officers reported firecrackers thrown into passing cars on two occasions and from moving vehicles in another. Hospital officials noted only minor injuries and no arrests were made.

Correl Bryan Coker 55 owner of Coker Furniture Store died Thursday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Funeral Monday at Rumsey Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Survived by widow Kathryn and several relatives. Elmer B. Williams 85 died Thursday at Elm Valley Rest Home Eudora grave side rites Sunday at Overbrook Cemetery. Rumsey Funeral Home in charge. Williams survived by sister Cora Michaels and several nieces and nephews.
Giovanni Pratesi, a 25 year old former prisoner in Alessandria Italy, promised to clean the jail yard after his release. He returned with a truck to tidy the yard but was later jailed again after police charged him with theft for stealing the truck.
